In Passage
In Passage is a series of photographs taken in the mid 1970's by the photographer B. D. Vidibor. These beautiful, often haunting, images were taken through train windows with all their imperfections and reflections. By shooting through windows, Vidibor layered the traditional view with elements that appear eerie and unreal. In so doing, he questioned not only the way we see things, but the nature of photography as a documentary medium.
Vidibor created images that are subjective views of the passing landscape. In some of his photographs, interior lights of trains reflect from the windows of homes or hover ghostlike. In others, blurred cloudy glass creates a veil across the landscape.
Although he took many of these photographs from moving trains, Vidibor often captured the precise moment when reflected light aligned with outside elements. His photographs mingle the interior and exterior, outer and inner worlds that rarely exist independently of one another.
Vidibor's desire to create illusive photographs with stratified meanings continued in the dark room where he manipulated light and dark tones, emphasizing particular objects and areas.
In so doing, he heightened the mysterious atmosphere of his photographs.
The photographs on view are a selection from the seventy-six images that make up In Passage.
